In our latest Euro Football Daily Explained, we look at the hooligan issue afflicting French football right now. The past few months have delivered some truly shocking scenes, from ultras at Nice crashing through advertising boards to attack Marseille players, to Dimitry Payet being hit by a bottle at Lyon. Elsewhere there have been various problems in Ligue Deux, while the likes of Lens, Lille, Anger and Bordeaux have all faced their own issues.

But why is this happening? In order to find out, we explore the history of hooliganism in France, the divisions in French football down political lines, and the impact of Covid and lockdown on the general public. But we also critique the failings of the French Football authorities in preparing for the possible disruption, and the owners too afraid to face up to their ultras.

Hooliganism is not a purely French issue, but Ligue Un could be under threat if more isn’t done to fix the problem now!
